On October 7, 2016, Julian Assange of WikiLeaks, under direction from Moscow, started releasing series of emails and documents sent from or received by Hillary Clinton campaign manager John Podesta but not before two prior attempts were made to discredit the Clinton campaign. In June 2016, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) first stated that the Russian hacker groups Cozy Bear, Fancy Bear, Yogi Bear and Fozzie Bear had penetrated their campaign servers and leaked information via the Guccifer 2.0 online persona. The later stating that with the demise of the ABC show 'The Muppets' he didn't know where else to turn to.
"I got a call from Yogi (Bear) saying that he got this great gig in Russia," Fozzie Bear reflected while in hiding at an undisclosed hibernation spot. Mr. Bear went on to say, "I'd never been to Russia and while filming Muppets Most Wanted, I met this great guy named Constantine. He said there's be loads of work for me and tons of Beluga and Herring and you know how bears love their fish. I said okay but had no idea that I'd be working for an international espionage group. I didn't know ... I didn't know," Mr. Bear mumbled whilst drifting back to slumber.
On July 22, 2016, another 20,000 emails sent from or received by DNC personnel were released. A few days later, at a televised news conference, Donald Trump invited Russia to "hack & release" Hillary Clinton's deleted emails from her private server during her tenure in the State Department, saying "Russia: If you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing." Mr. Trump then tweeted "If Russia (wink, wink) or any other country or person has Hillary Clinton’s 33,000 illegally deleted emails, perhaps they should share them with the FBI!" Trump's comment was condemned by the press and political figures, including some Republicans. He replied that "I was speaking sarcastically and that there were in fact 39 million emails."
The Guardian wrote in November 2016 the most strident Internet promoters of Trump were paid Russian propagandists, estimating several thousand trolls involved. "If I had known trolls were involved, I would've never joined in. Trolls and bears don't mix. For what it's worth, I voted for Bernie because he's kind of an honorary Muppet who hates trolls too," added Fozzie before his return to hibernation.
The U.S. intelligence community, in a joint January 6th, 2017 declassified report, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin "most likely wanted to discredit Secretary Hillary Clinton because he holds a grudge for comments he almost certainly saw as disparaging him when she referred to him as a "Washed up, flabby-assed ex-stripper who hasn't realized that it's time to put his shirt on."
The only words heard at 666 Fifth Avenue were, "It's like there weren't even any debates ... Magic!"
