Chrysler Unleashes the Tommy-Guns and Takes Out the Gangsta ... also Chevy kills the Malibu.

Back in 2003, the Chrysler 300 concept was revealed at the New York Auto Show. Designed by Burke Brown, the car was to be a modern interpretation of the infamous 1955 C-300. It did more than that. Chrysler created a car that turned heads and inspired snarls ... "Now that's a bad-ass lookin' car".

It was the new Gangster. Its high flanks and low roofline inspired sinister thoughts. Barack Obama, Snoop Dogg, and Miss Piggy all owned one.

At its introduction in 2004, Chrysler sold nearly 123,000 examples and followed up the next year with nearly 159,000 300's sold. It wasn't necessarily the most technologically advanced car to be sure, but it had presence like nothing else on the road, albeit possibly a Bentley, which it certainly resembled and was often compared to, but what the hell, that's not a bad comparison. An American icon was reborn.

The 300 in the 1955 "C-300" originally stood for the 300 hp (220 kW) engine. The C-300 was a race car aimed at the NASCAR circuits that was sold for the road for homologation purposes, as per NASCAR rules of the day. Chrysler installed its most powerful engine, the 331cu in (5.4L) FirePower “Hemi" V8. So called due to the hemispheric shape of the combustion chambers. It was fitted with twin 4-barrel carburetors, a race-profiled camshaft setup, solid valve lifters, stiffer suspension, and a performance exhaust system. By 1956, this would be the first American production car to top 355 hp (265 kW), and the letter series was for many years the most powerful car produced in the United States.

The modern 300 eventually received a 6.4L 470bhp, 470lb-ft torque Hemi that was installed into the range topping SRT-8.

The age of the full-size American sedan is coming to a speedy close. There are technically five sedans sold in America in 2020 that are listed as full-size (not including Luxury sedans) as Buick, Chevy and Ford have bowed out. That number has now gone to four with the demise of the 300. Some will blame Obama. Some will blame the Chinese and their virus. I blame the continuing love of the "SUV". I don't drive full-size cars but I love being driven in one. May the U.S.' last gangster not Rest In Peace. May their 6.4ltr Hemi roar on ... Tommy-Guns a blazing.

Chrysler seems to be planning on an all electric halo car to replace the 300 in 2023 but by then, electricity might be a thing of the past ... and there will not be any snarling.

Also in the news, Chevrolet has discontinued the Malibu. Not terribly exciting news but remember this, the Malibu was the platform that the El Camino was based on and that beast was cool as fuck! ..."the rooooooad".
